We’ve gone for a solid blend of sustainability funds and those focused on emerging markets and disruption with some resolute absolute return funds and funds that protect wealth over time. And of course, no portfolio would be complete without the in-form funds.
But this is just our portfolio and everyone else’s will be different depending on their circumstances and what they want to achieve.
Getting the right balance
When it comes to building a portfolio, here at TD we feel there are a lot of similarities to selecting an international football squad. Take the Euros, every manager will tell you it’s all about getting the right balance in a bid to achieve the results they want.
But each squad is a unique thing. Just look at Roy Hodgson and his England squad, he has invested his hopes in youth and attack. That is different from Antonio Conte as head of Italy, who has plumped for experience and defence. Whereas Chris Coleman is sticking to his tried and tested formula that served him and Wales so well in the qualifiers.
We feel that these varying approaches can easily be applied to the building of an investment portfolio. This is why we have built a portfolio based on the 23-players squad model of the Euros. For each position – goalkeeper, defence, midfield and attack – we identified a selection of funds that met the various characteristics required of those positions. Midfield was where we had the majority of funds, as this was split into technical skill (technical midfielders), solid and dependable (defensive midfield) and exciting luxury funds (wingers and playmakers). We are also threw some exciting new and emerging funds into the mix across the squad.

We wanted to achieve a well-balanced squad that gave us exposure to some exciting investment areas we’ve been focusing on like sustainability, disruption and income. We also wanted some funds that use technical insights. We offset this with steadier funds to ensure that we had the right balance of attack and defence.
